La Unió hosts the presentation of OntoClinic, the new pharmaceutical prescription assistant co-created by Hospital Clínic and Costaisa

Webinar de OntoClinic en La UnióHospital Clínic de Barcelona and Costaisa have presented OntoClinic, the new decision support system for pharmaceutical prescription co-created by both organizations, in a session organized by La Unió and open to its members and healthcare professionals. Based on ontologies, the system is capable of analyzing a large amount of patient clinical data in real-time to offer personalized recommendations on medication prescriptions.

The presentation was given by Jordi Campo, Director of Health at Costaisa, and Julian Verdinelli, Pharmacist and Bioinformatician at the Medical Informatics Unit of Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, accompanied by Maria Pueyo, Director of the Care and Participation Area of La Unió. In his speech, Jordi Campo focused on patient safety and the product's approach as "open to other system actors to incorporate new use cases."

Medication errors are one of the main causes of adverse events in hospitalized patients as they are a frequent cause of illness, disability, hospitalization, and even death worldwide, as well as having a high economic cost for healthcare systems. Julián Verdinelli explained the system's operation, which considers the patient's clinical information along with the "trial" or moment when the information is contrasted based on a knowledge base specified by the Drug Agency or the Sire of CatSalut, in addition to an expert committee for the specific use case. From there, a rule engine is incorporated that allows comparison and generates alerts and recommendations for dose modification, for example.

OntoClinic is an initiative led by the Pharmacy Service and the Medical Informatics Unit of Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, and Costaisa is its technological and commercial partner, to ensure the product reaches the market, which is expected by the end of this year once the medical device certification is obtained.
