The I Fórum BIB focuses the debate on the use of big data in bioinformatics

Red neuronalCostaisa has attended the I Fórum BIB organized by the Associació Bioinformàtics Barcelona (BIB) that has brought together about 300 representatives of the Administration, technology companies, pharmaceutical companies, research centers, universities, health professionals and patient associations. The Cosmocaixa was the site chosen to accommodate a day that has focused the debate on the use of big data in bioinformatics.

Experts from each discipline have met in panel discussions where they have analyzed the expectations and realities of bioinformatics in precision health, the ethical and moral aspects of data sharing, and technological advances and their limitations. In the opinion of Ana Ripoll, President of the BIB, "bioinformatics is one of the most important technological challenges of the next decade".

Dr. John Quackenbush, professor of Computational Biology and Bioinformatics at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health, was the guest lecturer, who showed the results of his research in the analysis of genomic variations and the behavior of the relationships between genes, and how are the structure and typology of these relationship networks.

The BIB is a non-profit association formed in 2015 for the promotion of training, research, the transfer of knowledge and technology, the stimulation of competitiveness and innovation within the industrial sector, all this in bioinformatics domain. Currently, it is made up of more than 50 institutions related to the sector, such as Costaisa, which develops its activities in the field of health and insurance from the perspective of information technologies.
